Challenges and Innovations in Postoperative Care: A Review of Medical-Surgical Nursing Interventions
Published in January-June (Vol. 1, Issue 1, 2025)
Abstract
Postoperative care is a fundamental aspect of medical-surgical nursing, encompassing a wide range of interventions to ensure optimal recovery, minimize complications, and improve patient outcomes. Despite significant advancements, various challenges persist, including inadequate pain management, risk of surgical site infections (SSIs), hemodynamic instability, psychological distress, and logistical constraints such as nursing shortages and inconsistent care protocols. Recent innovations in postoperative care have focused on integrating technology, such as telemonitoring, electronic health records, and artificial intelligence, to enhance patient monitoring and complication prediction. Additionally, evidence-based pain management strategies, including Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols and multimodal analgesia, have improved pain control while reducing opioid dependence. Advancements in infection control, wound care techniques, structured discharge education programs, and multidisciplinary care models have further optimized patient recovery. Future directions in postoperative care should emphasize the role of emerging technologies, strengthen nursing education, standardize care guidelines, and implement policy reforms to enhance efficiency and patient-centered care. Continued research and adaptation of best practices are essential for improving postoperative outcomes and advancing the role of medical-surgical nursing.
