The Role of Medical-Surgical Nurses in Managing Chronic and Acute Conditions: A Comprehensive Review
Published in January-June (Vol. 1, Issue 1, 2025)
Abstract
Medical-surgical nurses are crucial in managing a wide spectrum of chronic and acute conditions, ensuring optimal patient care in diverse healthcare settings. Their responsibilities extend beyond clinical interventions to include patient assessment, medication management, interdisciplinary collaboration, patient education, and adherence to healthcare protocols. This comprehensive review explores the multifaceted role of medical-surgical nurses in chronic disease management, including diabetes mellitus, hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease, and cancer care. Their role in acute care settings, such as post-surgical recovery, sepsis management, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and cardiac emergencies, is also discussed. Despite their critical contributions, challenges such as high patient loads, nurse burnout, and the need for continuous education persist. Future recommendations include enhancing specialized training, improving nurse-patient ratios, and expanding the role of nurses in chronic disease management. Addressing these factors can strengthen medical-surgical nursing practices and improve patient outcomes in modern healthcare systems.
